Sonia Showalter Designs is coming to Humble Sewing Centeron Saturday, September 12, 2009.

Sonia will be holding two embroidery seminars.

The Morning Session will feature Free Standing Lace Jewelry embroidery. All attendees will receivean original, prerelease design. Youwill learn how to embroidery free standing lace, the best techniques to makeperfect lace every time, and you will take home a unique piece of jewelry foryourself or for a gift.

The afternoon session willfocus on Embroidery on Fine Linens. All attendees will receive an originalprerelease design and the fine linen to embroider the design. You willlearn the secrets of embroidering on very delicate and sheer lines. And, youwill take home a completed project.

The fee is $35 per session or $65 for both. Lunchis included for all who attend either the morning or afternoon session. Husqvarna Viking 4D Software Club

Do you have the Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff 3D or 4D software? If so, consider attending our 4D Software club. Each month you will do an exercise designed to improve your knowledge of the software.

Come with a notepad, pen, and notebook computer with 4D Software installed. If you don't have a notebook computer, you can watch the demonstration and take notes.

Marje Agostini is the instructor. She has been teaching classes on the viking software classes for more than 8 years and has taught at the Husqvarna Viking convention. She brings her enthusiasm and expertise on the Husqvarna Viking product line to Humble Sewing Center.

The club usually meets the 4th Thursday of the month from 5:30-8:00 pm, but in May the club will meet on Thursday, May 29 from 5:30-8:00.

If you don't have any embroidery software, you are welcome to attend the club meeting so that you can get an understanding of what the software can do for you. The 4D Software is a multi-format embroidery software so you can save designs in the different formats required by other embroidery machines.

Husqvarna Viking - New Product Line at Humble Sewing Center

We have expanded our line of sewing, embroidery, and quilting machines and sergers by adding the Husqvarna Viking product line to our dealership. We also carry a supply of accessories for the Husqvarna Viking machines both new and old.

You may have heard that Husqvarna Viking is introducing a new top of the line sewing / embroidery machine at their convention in mid June. Serger Tips and Serger Class Update

The Sewing Academy inside of Humble Sewing Center is keeping very busy with all kinds of great classes like machine embroidery, quilting, software mastery, beginning sewing, and serger lessons.

Ann Mazoch is our resident Serger Expert, and I'm her assistant during the Beg. and Int. Serger Classes. Below you will find some helpful serger tips and information about our upcoming Intermediate Serger Class.

Serger Tips for Fake Fur

* Use a slightly longer stitch than normal.

* Use polyester or poly-wrapped cotton thread for serging.
* Check your needle before serging to make sure you're using a new needle.

* Cut your pattern out as before; however, trim the seam allowance to 1/4 inch on the pattern before you cut the pattern pieces from the fur. Though the serger will cut the fur, this fabric will rapidly dull your blades.

* Adjust your serger to a flat-lock stitch with the widest stitch width. Test-serge a fabric swatch to check for your tension. You'll probably need to loosen the tension setting because of the longer stitch length and the heavier fabric.

* Check and set your differential feed, if available. Adjust the differential feed so the top layer of fur feeds evenly.

* Gently pull the seam open after serging. Use your fingers or the wire comb to remove the fur from the seam.

Intermediate Serger Class

Time: 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. (Feel free to come at 5 pm for extra help with threading your serger)
Fee: $40
You can register online at www.sewvacoutlet.com or come in to Humble Sewing Center and sign up in person.

Supply List:
Serger in good working condition with all of its accessories and if possible, the manual.

If you are not sure that your serger is working properly, please bring it in to Humble Sewing Center at least 7-10 days before your class. When you show them that you have paid for Serger Class, you will get a discount on any service or repair your serger may need. It is very important to make sure your serger is working before coming to class because, there will not be a repair technician available to assist you during Serger Class.

At least 2 size 14 needles
Wire Needle threader
Required Decorative Threads:
1 spool of Poly yarn any color – similar to Woolly Nylon but better (available @ HSC for $5.99)
1 spool of Designer 6 any color – thick shiny decorative thread (available @ HSC for $2.99)
4 cones of regular serger thread 4 different colors

Optional Decorative Threads:
1 spool of Gold Candlelight – metallic (available @ HSC for $3.99)
1 spool of Pearl Crown Rayon – almost like crochet thread (available @ HSC for $4.99)

Intermediate Serger Class Syllabus:
1. 4-thread seam
2. V neck seam – overcasting inside slit or inside corner
3. 3 thread seam w/ sheer fabric
4. outside corners w/ decorative thread without cutting thread
5. overcasting oval w/ decorative thread
6. attaching ribbing
7. 3 thread band hem & casing
8. rolled hem w/ monofilament
9. rolled hem w/ poly yarn
10. rolled hem w/ thin floral wire
11. lettuce edge – ribbing
12. 2 thread lingerie sewing
w/ elastic
w/ ribbon & lace
13. embellishing w/ rows of ribbon & lace
14. 2 thread flatlock seam & overcasting w/ decorative thread in lower looper
15. 2 thread flatlock dec. satin stitches w/ dec. thread in needle using needle threader
16. reset machine for 4 thread w/ reg. threads and checking tensions

Note: During Intermediate Seger Class you will complete a workbook with space for attaching samples and taking notes. You will be able to refer back to this notebook in the future to remember how to set your machine to achieve the various techniques you learned in class.

Beginner Serger Classes

In my last post I mentioned that we have relocated and that we now have a full fledged Sewing Academy.

I wanted to take a moment and focus on just one of the many areas we offer classes for. The topic of today is our Beginning Serger Class. I am happy to say that one of our long time staff members is teaching the Serger Classes.

Ann Mazoch has been teaching these classes for over 30 years and is one of the forerunners of finding creative and decorative applications for the many features available on most new sergers. Her classes are so helpful and informative that they are continuously at capacity and there is actually an ongoing waiting list to enroll for the next available class offered.

If you own a serger and have not taken time to learn how to use it, or if you haven't used it in ages and need a refresher course, the Beginner Class is for you. You will complete a take home manual filled with stitch samples, instructions and settings etc. for your particular machine.

All makes and models of sergers old and new are welcome in this informative hands on class.

Hello and welcome to the official blog for Humble Sewing Center - SewVac Outlet!

Here at HSC we've recently gone through a number of changes that we'd like to take a minute to tell you about.

First of all, we've recently relocated from our store near Jo-ann Fabrics in Humble, TX to a shop just around the corner located in Humble Plaza at 19333 Hwy 59 Suite #105. Our new store hours are:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, & Saturday 9:30am to 5:30pm
Tuesday & Thursday 9:30am to 8:00pm

We are pleased to let you know that our new store has a much larger and nicer showroom than ever before and that we have our very own Sewing Academy with a spacious classroom for your learning enjoyment.
